Work initiated on a field visit to Orkney.

Before visiting a place, preconceptions exist in the mind. What the landscape will look like. What the weather might be like. What work might be undertaken there. On visiting the islands and carrying out initial fieldwork, all preconceptions disappeared. Thoughts altered and shifted course. Lines of enquiry overlapped, came to an end, or continued and developed into ideas.

The dramatic weather conditions on the island of Hoy inspired a video work. A piece of bright white fabric, held against a murky white sky, beating in the wind, created stunning imagery of the powerful force of nature at work. Stills of the blowing fabric, revealed forms that could be found elsewhere in Orkney - a crashing wave, a rippling sea, an undulating glen and sculptured rock formations, eaten by wind and sea.

This experience was summarised as an abstract diagram, traced from a still of the white fabric blowing in the wind. The drawing illustrated the different lines of enquiry that had been pursued and reinforced the dramatic topography and weather conditions that had been experienced on the islands. The disorderly and tangled stretch of the diagram expresses the period of engagement with the artist and the site.
