The Secovlje Saltpans, located just outside Piran, have existed for centuries. The first written record of them is in the Piran statute which dates from the second half of the 13th century.

Today the saltpans are being managed as they have been for centuries, to conserve the cultural heritage and also to protect the fragile and rare ecosystems which have developed there.
